Favorite Quote:“I realize we all walk around pretending we have some control over our fate, because to recognize the truth--that no matter what we do, the bottom will fall out when we least expect it--is just too unbearable to live with.”
Short Summary: The book begins with Kit Lowell, a member of the popular crowd, making the unexpected decision to sit with friendless David Drucker, a loner. This encounter leads to a friendship forming between the unlikely duo (or is it something more?). In the spur of the moment, Kit asks David to help her investigate her dad’s accident in the hopes of curing her curiosity of how her father’s death could have been avoided. David readily agrees, but neither of them can tell just how much their investigation could possibly ruin the comfortable relationship they have worked to build up. Will Kit and David be able to get through the hurdles together? Read the book to find out!
Favorite Character: My favorite character is Kit Lowell. She is kind, compassionate, and loyal; she stands by what she believes and sees beyond the surface.
Theme(s): Friendship; Love; Grief
Why Should You Read It?: Through reading What To Say Next, we get insight on the thoughts and emotions of two teens enduring the harsh constraints of high school and society in general. As we read about how David survives with the shadow of Asperger syndrome always following and Kit juggles her father’s death, mother’s betrayal, and the realization of how trivial high school politics truly is, we see them overcome the obstacles life presents them at every turn and see how they come back stronger than ever. This book is a real eye-opener and shows us the importance of family and knowing who you can actually depend on.
